Parque da Liberdade

Temporary public realm lighting, 2011.

Opened in 1937, Parque da Liberdade in the picturesque town of Sintra, near Lisbon in Portugal is host to over 60 different species of plants and trees. A temporary lighting installation transformed the park and proposed an alternative night-time ambience for a softly-lit twilight promenade through the garden interior.

Additional, simple installations in warm colour tones activated the seating areas dispersed along the route and created social gathering points that enrich and integrate the park into the wider public realm of the town. Although the park is usually closed after dark, over 9,000 people visited and were able to to explore the installation over the three nights.
