Mandeville Place

Public realm lighting design, 2014-2015.

This orchard and pavilion at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park was created to celebrate the most successful Paralympic Games ever. Fruit trees native to the homes of the 34 Team GB Paralympian gold medallists are planted here and carved into the ground are the Paralympic values of Courage, Determination, Inspiration and Equality, as well as Professor Stephen Hawking’s memorable quote from the Opening Ceremony: ‘Don’t look down at your feet, look up at the sky; be curious’.

Studio Dekka’s lighting design used bespoke LED luminaires integrated into the brick and perspex columns constructed from the Paralympic Truce Wall from 2012. The aim was to create a lighting scheme that had minimal visual impact on the orchard during the day, and a subtle lit effect after dark.
