4&6 Kingsway Arcade
Temporary design and installation, 2010.
To launch a new Strategic Development Framework, Studio Dekka were commissioned by Kirklees Council to design and install a temporary venue across three floors of a vacant unit in Dewsbury town centre. The aim of the project was to explore the potential to match empty buildings with potential tenants. Small local businesses served a course each – a Polish starter, an Indian main and Greek dessert – on each of the floors, with a local micro-brewery offering a tasting menu of craft ales.
The journey through the building was structured by the lighting: saturated blue light to the staircases and warm light from pendants built from reclaimed cans. The main course was served on bespoke tables designed, built and finished by Studio Dekka using materials reclaimed from the property. The tables were subsequently donated to Leeds Metropolitan University Graphic Design Department and the New Picture House.
